David and Giving

Our Summer Series Thru The Life of David
THE MAKING OF A KING
Lesson 12: Generous Giving
1 Chronicles 29:1-20
One of the most exciting events to take place in David’s life happened towards the end of it. As a leader, nothing excites your heart more then to see God move in His people in such a way that they see what you see, and they feel what you feel.

1 Chronicles 29 is the story of how the people of God accepted the God-size challenge that was before them by placing their trust, hope and riches in God.

I. God-size Challenges Require EVERYONE to Be Involved! (vs. 1-5)
A. The task is greater than . . .
1. One man’s ability (Solomon)
2. One man’s devotion (David)
3. One man’s resources (David)

II. The task requires everyone, beginning with the leaders, to “CONSECRATE” themselves to the Lord.

A. “consecrate”- to fill one’s hand, used when installing a priest into service. (see 1 Peter 2:9)
When we consecrate ourselves we consecrate we let loose of the 3 T’s:

Time, Talents, Treasures

B. Consecrated people understand that (vs. 14-20) . . .
C. Generosity is an opportunity to rejoice in the Lord (vs. 14a)
D. Everything we have (i.e. the 3 T’s) is from God to begin with (vs. 10-13, 14b-16)

God uses the call to give so we can prove to God and ourselves our allegiance and trust to Him. (vs. 17-20)
“test”- to examine, as to prove a metals worth or purity
“integrity”- evenness, level

E. Our giving is to be willingly and with “honest intent”

10 Principles For Christian Giving
Giving is investing with God (Luke 6:38; Matt. 6:19-21, 24; 2 Cor. 9:6-7; Matthew 19:21)
Giving is to be sacrificial (Mark 12:41-44; Heb. 13:16; Philip. 4:18-19)
Giving is not a matter of what you have (Luke 16:10; 2 Cor. 8:1-2, 7)
Giving affects spiritual riches (Luke 16:11)
Giving amounts are personally determined (Luke 19:1-8)
Giving is to be in response to need (Acts 2:43-47; 4:32-37; 11:27-30)
Giving is to demonstrate love, not law (2 Cor. 8:8; 2 Cor. 9:7)
Giving is to be planned (1 Cor. 16:1-2, 2 Cor. 9:7)
Giving is to be generous (2 Cor. 8:2; 9:5-6)
Giving generously results in blessing (Philip. 4:10 & 19, 2 Cor. 9:6-11, Acts 20:35)

“Now, who is willing to consecrate himself today to the LORD?”
